Company Background

Spiral was founded in 1998. The founding team brought together strong experience in cutting-edge mathematical research and oil sector software development.

Based in Cambridge (UK), the company was set up in response to a perceived change in the needs of the evolving oil industry. The modern oil industry faces a growing challenge: while environmental specifications on products grow tighter each year, many of the remaining reservoirs offer relatively poor quality crude oil. In this context, understanding the detailed refining behaviour of crude oil is more critical than ever before.

Our software tools are designed from the ground-up for today’s challenges, allowing companies to benefit from the most recent developments in laboratory measurement, mathematical modelling and information technology. They play a business-critical role in over 60 companies across over 200 sites around the world, including global implementations by three oil majors.

In addition to our software tools, Spiral offers a wide range of services, from technical consultancy and training courses through to full assay outsourcing. We also offer business consultancy, where we have experience of helping some of the smallest and largest companies in the industry make best use of crude oil knowledge across their business processes.
