As part of the Schneider Electric organisation, Spiral Software has a strong development focus, with over two thirds of our staff in software development roles. We provide industry-leading technology for the process industries, focusing in particular on the oil and petrochemicals sector.

We are committed to maintaining and building our technology lead making significant investments into research and development each year. Our tools are the established industry leader in crude oil selection and refinery modelling, allowing our clients to make optimal use of available feedstock while maximising safety and minimising environmental impact.

They play a business critical role for over 70 companies, including all the oil majors. Our new supply chain toolset, launched in 2010, expands the scope of our tools into a much broader market. A strong development roadmap will add further modules for scheduling and logistics management as well as addressing other process industries, such as food & beverage, chemicals, mining and pharmaceuticals.

Job Profile

Working with the other members of the R&D IT team, you be responsible for IT services with the role balancing end user support with IT infrastructure maintenance and development. You will need to be bright and enthusiastic with excellent communication, troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Interacting closely with the development and customer support teams, you will help us implement industry leading tools to meet our IT needs, selecting, testing and implementing off-the-shelf products where appropriate, or integrating systems to provide new services to maintain Spiral's IT advantage.

We are looking for applicants who have a strong academic record, a good degree or equivalent qualification and previous experience in an IT support role. Applicants must have a broad level of IT knowledge but also be able to demonstrate areas of expertise. A strong interest in general IT, computer hardware and software is highly desirable. A strong technical background, good communication skills and problem solving abilities are essential. Successful applicants will be flexible, self-motivated and will work well as part of a team.


  • Experience working in a technical or IT support role.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows client and server operating systems.
  • Good knowledge of IP networking such as subnets, routing and NAT.
  • A proven ability, in either an academic or a commercial context, to:
    • Work independently on significant projects, delivering to deadlines,
    • Research technical topics in a timely and effective manner,
    • Balance helpdesk support work with development projects,
    • Understand and communicate detailed technical requirements.
  • A strong interest in and up-to-date knowledge of software and hardware in Windows desktop and server sector.


  • Degree in a technical discipline or another relevant qualification.
  • Experience working in a software development environment.
  • Experience of implementing, supporting and maintaining one or more of Microsoft SQL Server, SharePoint, Exchange, Active Directory and Hyper-V environments.
  • Experience or understanding of security technologies: for example, VPN, firewalls, Anti-Virus products or IPsec.
  • Experience of Active Directory Group Policy and management.
  • Experience of Microsoft Windows Server Core and Hyper-V Core editions.
  • Good knowledge of networking technologies such as trunking, VLANs and spanning tree.

Salary and Benefits

This role enjoys a salary of up to £25,000-35,000 pa depending on background and past experience.
